A: MEMRA is Aramaic for "word."

Q: Is online learning with MEMRA right for me?

  • comfortable with computer technology;
  • good time management skills;
  • independent and self-motivated;
  • good reading comprehension skills;
  • willing to share their ideas and carefully consider their responses to others;
  • prepared to have their ideas challenged occasionally.

Q: Do I need any special equipment for MEMRA courses?
A: There are two essential items required for taking MEMRA courses: a computer (any operating system) and a high speed internet connection (i.e., not dial-up). A webcam is recommended, since some courses may include optional video-conferencing events with the professor.

Q: Is there a deadline for registering for MEMRA courses?
A: Yes. Registration for MEMRA courses ends two weeks prior to the start of each ten week session. See the Course Calendar for beginning dates for each 6 week module session and the registration deadlines.

Q: When do students pay for courses?
A: Students pay for each course when they register online through the MEMRA website. Courses must be paid in full for students to begin the course.

Q: Are textbooks included with MEMRA course registration?
A: No. registration tuition costs do not include textbook payment. Students must acquire textbooks on their own prior to the beginning of the course. There are links to Amazon.com listings for each required textbook under the course descriptions and in the MEMRA Bookstore.

Q: What is a "module"?
A: A module refers to a six week class period. See the course calendar for modules and their dates.

Q: Are MEMRA courses accredited? Can I earn a degree from MEMRA?
A: MEMRA courses are not accredited, and the institute offers no degrees. The emphasis is on delivering content in a low-pressure environment.

Q: Does MEMRA Institute have a refund policy?
A: Yes. Students will receive a full refund for courses if they notify the professor of their desire to withdraw prior to the beginning of the course (i.e., the first schedule day of the course). Once the course begins there is no refund. With respect to bundled courses: (1) If the student cancels registration for the first course of the bundle before that course begins, the student will receive a full discount; (2) once the first course of the purchased bundle package begins, students will receive a 50% discount for the bundle *if the student withdraws from the first course in the bundle purchase before the first course in the bundle purchase ends. End dates are determined by the course calendar. Once the first course in a bundle purchase has been taken and completed, there is no refund for the bundle purchase.

Q: Can courses be cancelled? What happens if I am registered for a course that is cancelled?
A: Yes, MEMRA reserves the right to cancel a course. Generally speaking, at least five people need to be registered for a course at the time the course is scheduled to begin. If fewer than five people are registered for a course, that course is subject to cancellation unless the professor wishes to offer it to fewer students. In the event a course is canceled, those registered will be informed of the cancellation and receive a full refund.

Q: Other than payment at registration, are there any other student obligations prior to the beginning of the course?
A: Yes. After student registration is processed, students will receive by email a document entitled "MEMRA Code of Conduct and Policy Agreement." This document is a PDF file that students must sign and return by email attachment by the beginning of the course. The document includes a code of conduct relating to discussion boards and forums that are part of course activities, as well as a statement of agreement relating to MEMRA policies. Students will be blocked from the course website if this document has not been received prior to the beginning of the course. A signed document is required for each course taken through MEMRA.
